Harwich sits on the southern side of the Orwell estuary, opposite Felixstowe, but just in Essex. It has a major passenger port further west, but the Ha’Penny Pier is a much smaller landing stage for the passenger ferry between Shotley, Harwich and Felixstowe. Opened in 1853, part of the original pier burned down in 1927. However, there’s still a good length to walk and a lovely café on the pier. The old ticket office is also a notable feature.
