DIY Gridded Snoot For Speedlightes

After making my DIY snoots a few weeks ago, I thought I would make an additional modification to one to give it a grid. This tends to focus the light even more than a snoot, and I’ll demonstrate that in another post later.

Here’s what I needed to make the grid:

I bought a pack of 50 black straws for a couple of quid. You could “acquire” them from your favourite coffee shop, but that probably requires you “drinking” rather a lot of expensive coffee…

I cut them into lengths of 5cm and piled them into the cylinder:

I tried to pack them in quite tight so the middle ones wouldn’t fall out. Some people who make them stick the straws together, but I thought I would leave them to move slightly if they needed to – since when the snoot is on the flash, one end has a more rectangular profile than the other which remains circular. I wasn’t sure if gluing them would prevent me putting it on the flash at all. Once they were all in, it looked like this:

Now to give it a test run!
