Notes: This evening I went to London to a lovely surprise birthday party, for a good friend of the family, at the Athenaeum Club in Piccadilly. I was too busy enjoying the do to take many pictures inside! But on the way home, I stopped near Piccadilly Circus to make a few pictures of the bright lights and wet streets.

Notes: I was very sad today to learn of the passing of Sir Patrick Moore. Years ago, my school careers advisory service said a good job for me would be astronomer. Instead, I went down the engineering route, but astronomy has always been close to my heart. Patrick Moore was one of those institutions who has endured for the whole of my lifetime – and beyond. He had been presenting BBC’s The Sky At Night programme for over 50 years – the longest-running host of the same television show ever. So farewell, Sir Patrick, you will be sorely missed. May your star shine brightly in the firmament.
