Day #986

Day #986 Title: Casting Off
Location: Calmac Ferry, Barra
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: Time to head home. I caught the early ferry from Castlebay to Oban and then had a long drive back to Carlisle on the first leg of my return journey. Not many opportunities for pictures, as the weather had packed up! These two gents were winding the ropes on the stern of CalMac’s ferry as we cast off from the harbour in Castlebay.

Day #985 Title: Tràigh Eais, Barraigh
Location: Barra
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: Another day when I was extremely lucky with the weather, and was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. Having witnessed one of the famous Barra Beach landings/takeoffs from the Cockle Strand runway, I decided to take a look at the beach on the other side of the road and over a dune. I just rounded the corner and was presented with this scene – which lasted all of 90 seconds before it was gone. What a great find for Treasure Hunt Theme #53 – A Rainbow or Other Atmospheric Effect.

Day #984 Title: Tràigh Siar, Bhatarsaigh
Location: Vatersay
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: After leaving my little cottage on North Uist, I headed south for the ferry from Eriskay to the island of Barra. It promised to be a beautiful sunset once I arrived, and having consulted the map, I headed for West Beach on Vatersay (joined to Barra by a causeway). I wasn’t disappointed – the clouds parted and the Atlantic rolled in along with a sea mist, giving my a great atmospheric shot.

Day #983 Title: Colourscape, Grìminis, Uibhist a Tuath
Location: North Uist
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: It was another sunny day with plenty of blue sky and fluffy clouds. I started out with another great walk at a local beach near Hosta, visited Lochmaddy and toured the northern end of North Uist again, before finding another little unexplored road to drive down. This time it lead me to a small jetty on Grìminis where they were unloading the day’s catch. This strong abstract reflection made a good find for Treasure Hunt Theme #22 – Colours.

Day #982 Title: Corran Àird a’ Mhòrain, Uibhist a Tuath
Location: North Uist
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: Today was all about sand! I did a very tiring but rewarding 7-mile hike out to Àird a’ Mhòrain via Tràigh Iar, Udal and back via Tràigh Ear. This was a pattern I found on the spit of sand at the north end of Tràigh Ear. The dark colour comes from particles of peat mixed with the sand. I liked the abstract nature of this found object.

Day #977 Title: Fàilte gu Port Rìgh
Location: Portree, Isle of Skye
Camera: Canon EOS 7D / 24-105mm EF f/4 L IS USM
Notes: Dear Mum, I made it safely to Skye. The drive from Carlisle was through some spectacular scenery; it was a shame I wasn’t able to stop very much to take pictures. Having arrived in Portree, I had a great evening catching up with Chris and Laura who used to work with me at the BBC, but left to move here for a quieter life. They are both really well and the lifestyle is suiting them. After some dinner, I went for a walk around the town and found this view from Staffin Road overlooking the harbour. A great find for Treasure Hunt Theme #64 – A Postcard Home To Mum.
