Title: The March Of Progress

Notes: This week’s 52 Themes 2009 topic is Technology. I have been struggling with it a little all week. Then yesterday I was backing up my recent photos from the Laptop to an external drive when I got the dreaded message “Disk full”. I had been expecting it for a while, so resolved to hot foot it into town this morning to buy a new high capacity drive. I came away with a rather nice shiny Seagate 1.5Tb box. Yes, that’s 1,500Gb or 1,500,000Mb. That set me thinking how storage media have changed over the past 10 years or so, and I dug around a few hidey holes in my cupboards to retrieve these bits and pieces. In order of capacity we have:
- 1.44Mb 3.5″ floppy drive (under the MD)
- 100Mb Iomega ZIP 100 removable floppy drive (second from bottom)
- 160Mb MiniDisc (under the CompactFlash)
- 700Mb CD-R (on top of DVD-R)
- 1Gb CompactFlash (top of stack)
- 4Gb USB stick (top RHS)
- 4.7Gb DVD-R (on top of Iomega drive)
- 80Gb external hard drive (on top of CD/DVDs)
- 1.5Tb external hard drive (bottom of stack)
How times have changed. I am just sorry I couldn’t lay my hands on a 5.25″ floppy drive as well!
