Notes: A reminder of how the countryside used to flash past on my way to and from London every day. Nice to see the other viewpoint now I’m freelance.

Once upon a time, many years ago, in another incarnation I worked on the railways. Among my jobs was being a member of a gang that installed and repaired these crossings. My task was quite simple: I was to stand between the tracks and call out when a train was in sight. I had say whether it was on the “up” track or the “down” and for the life of me, I still can’t remember which is which……

To put you out of your misery, “Up” is always towards London, no matter what direction it is, “Down” is always away from London. Don’t ask me why!
